Missoula Loses Elote: Why the Popular Mexican Spot Is Shutting Down
While most people were celebrating the first day of the new year, one Missoula restaurant made the difficult announcement that it will be closing its doors this Sunday, January 4.
Why Elote Is Closing
Elote Mexican Bar and Grille, located in Southgate Mall, announced the closure on its Facebook page. After nearly two years of being in business, the restaurant was couldn’t obtain a full liquor license, making continued operation unsustainable.

Elote featured a Southern Mexican and Oaxacan-inspired menu, with dishes made from scratch by hand daily. They feature a variety of street corn, and are known for their exceptional Oaxacan Mole Enchiladas.
What Made Elote Special
My family and I have eaten there a handful of times over the past two years, and every time we've had a good experience. The food was good, and the staff was always kind and courteous to us. We were very impressed with their Aztec Chocolate Cake; not only was it delicious, but the slice we had was gigantic—chocolate with a little hint of spice.
Elote was started by the Pangea Restaurant Group, who also own the Pangea Bar & Restaurant, Stave & Hoop Cocktails and Provisions, and the Liquid Planet Grille.
Final Weekend to Visit
If there were any dishes that you appreciated from Elote, you will have this weekend to enjoy them one last time.
There have been multiple restaurants in that location in the Southgate Mall, and it will be interesting to see if a restaurant will eventually fill that space, of if it will turn into something else entirely.
