Montana is one of the most expensive states to own a dog, making it even more important to take good care of your furry friend. 4th of July celebrations are some of the most traumatic for dogs. The late night fireworks can cause a lot of dogs to bolt and try to find shelter from the chaos. Halloween is another holiday that can cause anxiety in your four legged friend.

The non-stop sound of doorbells from trick-or-treaters visiting your house. Scary costumes, neighborhood activity all happening at night can affect your pets. Every time the doorbell rings, my dog reacts as if we're being invaded. Here are some tips to help keep your pets safe for this coming Halloween season.

  • Make sure that your pets have a micro-chip and are registered through your veterinarian.
  • If you don't have them "chipped" make sure that they have their collar and tags on that night.
  • Petco has a pet registry at Lovelost.com where people can post lost pets or found pets.
  • Keep pets away from candy.

We learned about the effects of candy the hard way with our dog years ago with an Easter basket that was left unattended. The dog was fine, but certain candy can be deadly to animals. This would be a good time to schedule an appointment with your vet to discuss options for keeping your pet safe with the upcoming Halloween holiday.
