Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On August 3, 2025, at approximately 7:00 AM, a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper observed a motorcycle initiate a turn onto Demer Street to head Northbound, but while doing so, it drove nearly through the middle of the southbound opposing lane of travel. It rapidly accelerated. The trooper did a U-turn and initiated a traffic stop.

The driver identified himself as 65-year-old Lawrence Kiner and later produced a Washington driver’s license. The trooper noticed his speech was extremely slurred and stuttered. His responses to questions were nonsensical and undecipherable. The trooper could smell the strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from him. His eyes were blood shot and watery. He was unsteady on his feet and had difficulty maintaining balance.

When asked how much he had to drink, Kiner said one beer, then three, then back down to two and a half. He was unable to follow simple commands like sitting on the bumper. While the trooper was attempting to reposition his patrol vehicle for field sobriety tests, Kiner returned to his motorcycle, got back on, and attempted to start it with keys he took out of his pocket.

Suspect Attempts to Flee

He yelled “I’m going!” The trooper removed him from the motorcycle. Kiner attempted to escape his grasp and fought with the trooper. However, he was taken to the ground and detained.

Kiner was transported to the hospital for medical clearance. Kiner was read implied consent and refused testing. A warrant was obtained, and blood was drawn. While at the hospital Kiner attempted to escape by running from the ER toward the doors. He was stopped by another trooper and security.
