Why Montana Housing Is Becoming Unaffordable
Some reports say that Montana will be the most unaffordable place to buy a home by 2030. When a list came across my social media feed with some of the most affordable mountain towns in the U.S. to buy a home, I was convinced there wasn’t going to be any town in Montana with affordable homes. I was wrong.

According to Moms Who Think, there is still a town in the country where you can purchase a home for less than $50,000. If you want to move to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the median home value is $40,000.
The National Ranking of Affordable Mountain Towns
Moms Who Think ranked 50 towns across the country with affordable median home prices. They also looked at median incomes using U.S. Census data and took into account rankings from Niche.com, which evaluates school rankings across the country for families.

The number one place on their list was Johnstown, but Hays, Montana, came in second on their rankings for affordable homes. The median price for a home in Hays is $63,600, with a median income of $49,423, and a Niche ranking of a C-.

Hays is located on the south end of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in north-central Montana, with a population of around 1,000 people. Hays is about an hour and a half away from Havre or Lewistown.
