Montanans Tip Big and Talk Bigger—Here’s the Data to Prove It

There have been multiple stories about delivery drivers not feeling like they are being tipped enough and the confrontations that followed. One of those stories happened earlier this year in Billings. Even though the DoorDash driver wasn't charged with assault, his employment was terminated by Door Dash.

When it comes to the topic of tipping, I have let my feelings be known for a long time. It shouldn't be up to me to decide how much a person gets paid for doing their job. Not tipping a waiter for example, affects not just the waiter, but how much cooks, bussers, and dish washers make too.

Montanans are Generous Tippers

Because there has been some pushback on tipping, there are more restaurants that are adding the tip directly into the bill. If you tip at that point you are going above and beyond.

When it comes to tipping Montanans are a generous bunch. Axios.com has the numbers, and Montana and Wyoming are the best states in the west for tipping.

Montanans leave an average tip equal to 20.2% of their bill. Wyoming (20.4%) is the only state in the west that tips more than us. The biggest tipping state in the country is Delaware (22.1%). California (17.3%) and Washington (17.8%) are not only the lowest tippers in the west, they are the lowest tippers in the country.

Even though I think we should totally do away with tipping, it's the system we currently have in place and I don't think it is going away any time soon. So I will continue to tip and I will do it generously, like other Montanans do.
